Sant'Angelo Castle in Rome, Lazio - Place Card
It stands on the right bank of the Tiber, not far from the Vatican to which it is connected thanks to a fortified corridor.
Modified several times, numerous rooms were destined for prison.
The most infamous cell was that called Sammalò: the condemned man was lowered from above and, because of the very little space, he could not stand up or lie down.
Some cells were reserved for politicians and others for special characters.
The "dungeons" were evasion-proof.
There was a luxury cell, reserved only for prisoners of a certain value.
The name of the castle derives from the vision of Pope Gregory the Great: the Archangel Michael who sheathed the sword.
This vision was interpreted as an omen of the imminent end of the plague, which actually happened.
To commemorate the event, the statue of an angel crowns the building.
Some curiosities: Puccini set here the last act of "Tosca"; the castle is one of the settings of "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown; appears in the videogame "Assassin's Creed".
Svetta sulla sponda destra del Tevere, a poca distanza dal Vaticano a cui è collegato grazie ad un corridoio fortificato.
Modificato svariate volte, numerosi ambienti vennero destinati a carcere.
La cella più malfamata era quella detta Sammalò: il condannato vi veniva calato dall'alto e, a causa del pochissimo spazio, non riusciva a stare né in piedi, né sdraiato.
Alcune celle erano riservate a politici e altre ancora a personaggi di riguardo.
Le "segrete" erano a prova di evasione.
Esisteva una cella di lusso, riservata solo a detenuti di un certo pregio.
Il nome del castello deriva dalla visione avuta da Papa Gregorio Magno: l'Arcangelo Michele che rinfoderava la spada.
Tale visione venne interpretata come presagio dell'imminente fine della peste, cosa che realmente avvenne.
Per commemorare l'avvenimento, la statua di un angelo corona l'edificio.
Alcune curiosità: Puccini ambientò qui l'ultimo atto della "Tosca"; il castello è una delle ambientazioni di "Angeli e demoni" di Dan Brown; appare nel videogioco "Assassin's Creed".
